The Fayetteville Area

Located in the northeast corner of Arkansas is Fayetteville; the Washington County seat of government. Interstate 49 runs north and south through the city; making it an ideal stopping point for highway travelers along the Interstate.  Fayetteville is located within the Ozarks on the fringes of the Boston Mountains.

The city, originally named Washington, was first populated by McGarrah family in 1828.  Construction on the courthouse began soon after and the county was established and chosen as the county seat in October of that same year and completed in 1829.  The post office was located within the courthouse.

In 1829, Washington was renamed Fayetteville, after Fayetteville, TN, where many of the original settlers of the Tennessee town arrived from.

Town development was furthered with the opening of the first store, houses built by early leaders of the town, and hotels.  The municipal government was suspended in 1859, during the Civil War and would remain so until 1867.  The first use of the telegraph arrived to Fayetteville in 1860; which marks a major technological event for the town.  The publishing of the Fayetteville Weekly Democrat began in 1868, which later became the Northwest Arkansas Times.  In 1871, the Fayetteville School District marked the first ISD in Arkansas.

The Civil War brought visitors such as Samuel Ryan Curtis, who stayed in Fayetteville in February of 1862 and within a week of his departure; the Battle of Pea Ridge broke out northeast of the city.  It also served as a medical station for wounded soldiers from the Battle of Prairie Grove in December of 1862.  Fayetteville is also the location where confederate troops trapped Union soldiers in April of 1863 and is where the U.S. government established a National Cemetery in 1867.  In 1873, a confederate cemetery was also established.

The University of Arkansas was founded in 1871.  Much of the present day population, during the school season, is made up of students attending the University of Arkansas - the state’s largest university.
